Der Designer Gordon Murray kam auf das Konzept, als er versuchte, die Leistung des BT46 gegen den mächtigen Lotus 79 zu steigern, der die F1-Saison 1978 bis dahin dominiert hatte - unter dem Vorwand, den Luftstrom und die Kühlung durch den Antriebsstrang zu verbessern (was er tatsächlich auch tat), würde der Lüfter im BT46B schneller blasen, wenn der Motor hochdrehte, und wenn er das tat, würde er die Luft unter dem Auto ansaugen und dabei astronomische Werte an Abtrieb erzeugen.


Das Auto fuhr nur ein einziges Mal - beim GP von Schweden 1978, den Niki Lauda in dominanter Manier gewann. Bernie Ecclestone - dem das Brabham-Team gehörte und der zu dieser Zeit auch begann, eine führende Rolle in der neu gegründeten Konstrukteursvereinigung der Formel 1 einzunehmen - beschloss, das Konzept aus dem Verkehr zu ziehen, um eine Fehde mit anderen Konstrukteuren zu vermeiden. Entgegen der landläufigen Meinung wurde der BT46B nie verboten oder als illegal eingestuft und ging mit dem eindeutigen Erfolg in den Ruhestand, 100 % der Rennen gewonnen zu haben, an denen er teilnahm.
